Even Vice President Kamala Harris said the first debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump went badly for him.
“We certainly started slow but finished strong,” Harris said at the start of a post-debate interview with CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.
Asked later if she had concerns, Harris reiterated that point: “We all know we got off to a slow start. I’m not going to debate that. I’m just talking about the choice of November.”
Overall, Harris sought to downplay the importance of the performance: She repeatedly highlighted the Biden administration’s accomplishments and sought to play up Trump’s anti-democratic rhetoric and opposition to abortion rights.
“I understand why people want to talk about this,” Harris said of Biden’s performance, “but I also think it’s important to recognize that there are extraordinary stakes involved in choosing between these two in the November debate.”
The vice president is one of several Democrats who could replace Biden as the party’s presidential nominee if he chooses to step down.
Biden’s weak performance during Thursday night’s debate, with frequent incomprehensible comments, has many Democrats in a state of panic.
