Amid reports of layoffs as companies shift to automation and AI, an Amazon executive said it’s a “myth” that robots and other technologies will replace jobs.
“It’s a myth that technology and robots will take away jobs,” Stefano La Rovere, Amazon La Rovere’s director of global robotics, mechatronics and sustainable packaging, told CNBC this week.
La Robert said that contrary to the view that new technologies will replace manual labor, technologies such as advanced robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are enhancing the role of people.
He added that new technology is leading to the creation of entirely new jobs. This is something Google CEO Sundar Pichai, ChatGPT creator’s head of OpenAI, and other executives have talked about in the past.
How robotics and AI have helped people do their jobs
The e-commerce giant says the introduction of new technology has enabled it to add more than 50,000 jobs across its European fulfillment centers.
“In recent years, the use of technology has created more than 700 new categories of jobs,” La Rovere was quoted as saying.
Amazon says it has introduced more than 1,000 new technologies across its European fulfillment center network over the past five years, with a total investment of more than €700 million.
“Robots and technology assist employees by reducing walking distances between tasks and eliminating repetitive motions. [by] I helped them lift heavy weights,” La Rovere was quoted as saying.
“As a result, employees are able to learn new skills, learn new competencies, and gain new competencies that allow them to advance toward their career goals,” he added.
