The holiday is associated with the US Civil War. According to Britannica, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, declaring slaves in the Confederate states free. However, African-Americans living in Texas did not learn of the news until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1965, to deliver the news to them.
Texas first celebrated Juneteenth in 1866 and made Juneteenth a state holiday in 1980. In 2021, it became a federal holiday.
