Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has revamped its BTech curriculum for students to make it more flexible and student-friendly. The newly revamped programme also allows students to finish the programme early if they wish.

We have updated our academic system to provide unprecedented flexibility, enhanced interdisciplinary learning, practical projects and entrepreneurial opportunities from the second year of our BTech programme.

According to an IIT Madras press release, these changes have been implemented following the strict recommendations of the school’s Curriculum Task Force, which emphasizes employability, research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The school has updated its academic system to provide unprecedented flexibility, enhanced interdisciplinary learning, practical projects and entrepreneurial opportunities as early as the second year of the B.Tech programme. Following extensive feedback from alumni and students, the total credits for B.Tech have been streamlined, reducing the practical hours per degree from 436 to 400 hours. This will enable students to explore professional and entrepreneurial possibilities more widely. The school also offers M.Tech. along with B.Tech. in five years, besides interdisciplinary degrees in cutting-edge areas in demand by the industry such as nanotechnology, data science and electric vehicles. These degrees can be obtained in seamless alignment with the B.Tech. programme, the press release said.

“IIT Madras gives top priority to innovation and entrepreneurship. Over 380 patents were filed last year and IIT Madras has launched an ambitious Startup 100 programme which means a startup will be born at IIT Madras every three days,” said Professor V Kamakoti, Principal, IIT Madras.

Students have the option to choose around 40 percent of their courses, and IIT Madras has 18 faculties and numerous advanced research centres, allowing students to explore diverse interests and build their own academic profiles, the school said.

“The IIT Madras curriculum helps students express their uniqueness while maintaining their core identity – their ability to be individual. We are pleased that the flexibility and distinctiveness of the new curriculum will enable students to rediscover the joy of learning,” said Prof. Pratap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras.

Additionally, the school is enhancing the first-year experience by giving first-year students an extra four weeks of vacation and introducing a new “recreational” course, and students can take an entrepreneurship elective in their second year, according to a press release.
