Dr. Cyriac Abby Phillips, known on social media as “The Liver Doc,” shared her reaction on X to a hotly-discussed podcast in which Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath discussed India’s liquor industry with Abhishek Khaitan, Minakshi Singh, Shuchil Suri, and Suraj Shehnai. Phillips slammed Kamath, accusing him of glamorizing the liquor business by “equating it with good medical intervention.” He went on to say that he treats patients with “alcohol use disorder and associated acute liver disease” almost daily.
“So far so good. Alcohol is good business. A business that sucks the life out of other people. It rakes in money for governments through taxation and monopoly, fattens the bank accounts of those behind the industry (groups like the Roundtable), and makes billionaires out of those with strong sales,” Liver Doc writes.
“But when these businessmen start equating the alcohol business with ‘good health care’ and glamorizing it, it certainly crosses into the realm of health misinformation. This is why I must continue to debate this completely rubbish myth that ‘alcohol in moderation is good for you’ and the completely nonsensical disclaimer they use to back up that myth, calling it ‘drink responsibly,'” he wrote. He went on to state that “it is, in fact, a crime to claim that drinking in moderation is good.”
“Patients and their families struggle to access adequate medical care as their savings are destroyed by alcohol use, and by the time they find the funds to begin treatment, the patient is already on a ventilator and in multiple organ failure,” he writes, talking about treating patients with alcohol-related health problems.
He then spoke about the effects of alcohol on the human body and examples of tragic accidents caused by drunk driving.
“These discussions on podcasts are not helping anyone here. Please do something that actually helps people here. Do something good for society instead of making these blunders. Nobody wanted this totally ridiculous topic on a podcast. It’s irresponsible. The whole team,” he added in X’s post.

A few days ago, River Doc responded to a post by Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who recommended hydrogen peroxide nebulization to treat viral infections. He slammed the actress, calling her “health and science illiterate.” Though the actress later explained her post, River Doc responded by accusing her of “playing the victim and promoting alternative medicine.”
As of now, Nikhil Kamath has not responded to River Doc’s post. This copy will be updated if the billionaire decides to express his views.
