The plane was forced to make an emergency landing after a man allegedly got naked and urinated in the aisle.
Neil McCarthy, 25, of Oregon, was arrested and charged with indecent exposure, which carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted, according to a statement from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York.
The incident allegedly happened on an American Airlines flight to Manchester, New Hampshire on July 3. According to reports, McCarthy “exposed himself and urinated in the aisle of the aircraft during the flight.”
The plane then landed in Buffalo, New York, and local police were notified.
“Once the plane landed, officers boarded the aircraft and spoke with flight attendants, who advised that McCarthy had exposed his genitals and urinated on the aircraft,” the statement read. “McCarthy was detained and escorted off the aircraft.”
Following his court appearance, McCarthy was “released on bond.”
This case was investigated by the Niagara Border Transportation Authority Police, under the direction of Chief Brian Patterson, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Matthew Miraglia.
The incident is one in a series of strange tourist behaviour in recent months.
In March, a flight from London, England to Newark, New Jersey, was diverted after a man “became belligerent and threatening towards him, stating he was going to ‘ruin the plane.'”
The man was ordered to pay a fine of $20,638.
In May, a woman was photographed in an overhead bin meant for passengers’ carry-on bags. According to aviation news site FL360aero, the incident happened on a Southwest Airlines flight from Albuquerque to Phoenix.
