- Stocks were somewhat mixed on Friday after hitting new records S&P 500 U.S. markets were closed on Wednesday for Fourth of July trading as rising unemployment pushed government bond yields further lower.Number holiday.
- The June jobs report, released Friday morning, was slightly better than expected, with nonfarm payrolls increasing by 206,000 instead of the expected 200,000. However, April and May figures were revised downward by 111,000. The unemployment rate rose to 4.1% in June from 4% the previous month. Average hourly earnings increased 3.9% year-over-year, as expected, but down from 4.1% the previous month.
- Several analysts defended the club’s name. Constellation Brands Beer giant Constellation shares fell more than 3% after the company reported earnings on Wednesday. JPMorgan raised its price target to $320 from $291 a share after a strong June. Analysts said their bearish views on Constellation’s Wine & Spirits business and election risks (tariffs/immigration) were overdone. The stock was up nearly 1% on Friday.
- Novo Nordisk Club Name Eli Lilly Novo’s shares fell on Wednesday after a study showed use of the GLP-1 drug semaglutide increased the risk of a rare eye disease. Analysts at Jefferies called the study “noise.” The stock rebounded on Friday.
- Samsung Electronics The company’s shares hit a three-year high in overseas markets on better-than-expected results and positive guidance, driven by a push from artificial intelligence.
