OTTAWA, April 16, 2024 (Globe Newswire) — Today’s budget delivers much-needed increases to graduate and postdoctoral fellowships, increases in core research funding, and more for researchers across the country. An investment has been made.

Today’s budget included investments in the following research:

$1.8 billion in core research grants for CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC over five years – an increase of approximately 30%

Increased annual amounts for master’s and doctoral student scholarships to $27,000 and $40,000, respectively, and postdoctoral fellowships to $70,000

Funds scholarships and fellowships for an additional 1,720 graduate students each year

$26.9 million over five years to the Grants Council to establish an improved grants management system

$30 million over three years to support Indigenous researchers and their communities
Although details are limited, the budget also suggests the creation of a new research funding organization to support researcher-initiated research and promote international, interdisciplinary, and mission-driven research.
