A high school entrepreneurship class provided Megan DeVries with an opportunity to learn how to work with large groups of people and also won a business award.

The 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Chatham Christian School has held two leadership roles at SikSox, a student-led company that produces custom-dyed and custom-embroidered socks.

Although much of the work that went into creating and operating SikSox was done in the classroom, DeVries said it was different from a typical school project where one or two people work in pairs. Ta.

“It’s different when you’re with a big group and trying to do different things at the same time,” she said. “So I think I learned how to work well with different people.”

Mr. DeVries was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year as part of the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce’s 136th Annual Business of Excellence Awards.

She was initially named SickSox’s vice president of finance, but was eventually moved to serve as interim president as needed during the company’s three-month run.

She did not expect to receive this honor. She provided information to her teacher to apply for the award, but she did not expect to hear back, she recalled.

“I was very surprised, but very grateful,” DeVries said.

Despite her success with SikSox, she wasn’t sure if her future included a career in business, but she felt it was a worthwhile endeavor.

“If you have the opportunity to do something like this, do it because it teaches you a lot about yourself and people and how to work with others and how to build a company.” said DeVries. “It’s really cool.”

DeVries and others will be honored at an awards ceremony Thursday at the Everest Convention Center in Chatham.
