Electric vehicle (EV) start-ups on Tuesday welcomed the Uttar Pradesh government’s announcement of a blanket exemption from registration tax on high-powered hybrid vehicles to promote the use of environment-friendly vehicles in the state.
The state is offering a 100 percent waiver on registration fees for heavy-duty hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
The move will benefit hybrid vehicles offered by automakers such as Maruti, Toyota and Honda.
Statiq co-founder and CTO Raghav Arora told IANS that this is a big step towards promoting environment-friendly vehicles.
“As an EV charging company, we applaud this initiative to make sustainable vehicles more accessible. This proactive government initiative will encourage people to switch to EVs and is in line with India’s broader goal of reducing carbon emissions and increasing the adoption of green technologies,” Arora said.
As this is an amendment to the existing EV policy, the relaxation in registration fees will be valid till October 2025.
Ankit Sharma, co-founder and director, Vidyuta Materials, said the startup, which is focused on manufacturing cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries in EVs, supports this initiative to increase the affordability of sustainable mobility.
“These measures will encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles and strengthen India’s efforts towards reducing carbon emissions and adopting environmentally sustainable technologies,” Sharma added.
