Melissa Lu is a woman with many interests and no fear of pursuing them. She is currently a Senior Venture Architect at Boston Consulting Group X (X.Ventures), which invents, builds, scales and invests in startups alongside world-renowned companies. She previously co-founded Delegate, an events startup that provides tech tools to create offline, virtual and hybrid event environments.

Prior to her foray into entrepreneurship, Melissa graduated from EHL Hospitality Business School (formerly known as École Hôtelière de Lausanne) and began her career in luxury and events partnerships with Quintessentially Singapore, a luxury concierge and lifestyle management group working with high-network and corporate clients.

Education as a foundation for success

My initial interest in event management and business led me to EHL and I was persuaded by its strong reputation and inspiring alumni testimonials.

When I received my acceptance letter, it was a no-brainer for me to accept the opportunity, as it would take me out of my comfort zone, into a fresh environment, and experience a new form of education that prioritizes practical skill sets.

I wanted a career where I could make an impact on society, and EHL gave me the right insight and inspiration to do that across a range of industries.

Working in a multidisciplinary team

We work in multidisciplinary teams bringing together different expertise, including engineering, product and strategic design, and support projects with our expertise in the commercial and operational aspects.

At EHL, I have honed my skills in nurturing and building relationships to achieve business goals together in an effective manner, so managing different skill sets, expertise and personalities for a single goal and objective felt like second nature to me.

This has definitely helped me professionally as I have been able to quickly adapt to different roles, environments and industries.

Adaptability and self-confidence

Moreover, EHL gave me a comprehensive business foundation including but not limited to financial management, marketing, operations, which gave me sharp real-world application, sharpened my business acumen, taught me to be flexible and adaptable, all of which helped me gain confidence and confidence in the hospitality industry.

While many may underestimate the importance of self-confidence, especially in management roles and start-ups, I believe presentation and delivery is just as important as technical “know-how.”

I believe these have helped me not only in my entrepreneurial journey but also in my current role as a Senior Venture Architect at BCG X. At BCG X, I work with multidisciplinary teams and play various roles on the venture-building journey, from business model development to operations to commercialization.

Developing future leaders and driving change

The value of such skills should not be underestimated and I believe they give all EHL graduates a competitive edge in today’s fickle and unpredictable world. For example, during my undergraduate years at EHL, we were always exposed to different groups of people, projects and jobs. It taught me flexibility, which is very important, especially when starting your own business in the technology sector, where you have to constantly pivot depending on market conditions and demands.

As a young student, I personally learned a lot from EHL’s resources: sharing sessions by industry experts, job placement platforms, and a global alumni network that’s always available. Now that I’ve graduated, I want to nurture my potential and give back to the same community that supported me on my journey. My education at EHL has equipped me with both technical and soft skills, and above all, the drive and confidence to pursue my interests.

I became convinced that the world was mine as long as I put my heart into it.
