Government Spokesperson, Col. Cyrus Oguna (Rtd.) called on the youths to embrace online jobs through the Ajira digital platform.
Addressing the media on Sunday after a prayer service at ACK Defassas in Gichugu constituency, Oguna said there are many opportunities for online workers and youths can take advantage of them to increase their income.
A government spokesperson said the government has facilitated access to digital opportunities in the country through the Agira Digital Program.
“Ajira’s efforts aim to equip young people with skills and enable them to secure genuine online jobs such as software development, transcription services, virtual assistance and other services that can be performed online.” he said.
Mr Oguna asserted that online jobs are available both within and outside Kenya’s borders and that with the relevant digital knowledge, all young people can secure jobs around the world.
He added that the Ajira program includes hiring mentors to provide training and providing free internet connectivity and workspace to all constituencies.
“There are currently more than one million young Kenyans making a living through online work. As the world struggles with the socio-economic challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, online platforms can safely operate their businesses and provide services,” he added.
Oguna also pointed out that young people make up 75 per cent of Kenya’s population and embracing technological change and innovation will encourage remote work as an alternative form of employment.
“About 75 per cent of our population is young people and if everyone enrolls in the Ajira Digital Programme, they will benefit and be able to turn online work into alternative employment,” he added .
He said many countries around the world are investing heavily in online businesses, which generate significant revenue for their respective economies, and that Kenya should go for it.
“The Ajira program will instill a spirit of innovation in our people and create a more technologically vibrant generation. We believe this is the way forward in the future,” he said.
And as the next general election approaches, Mr Oguna called on young people to vote enthusiastically for leaders who promote an agenda that resonates with young people to avoid being exploited by politicians.
“With elections coming up, young people need to make sure they’re committed to their agenda before they vote. Don’t vote just because the leader is from your area,” he said. I warned you.
Oguna attended the church service accompanied by Laikipia County Governor Ndiritu Murisi, Uriri MP Mark Nyamita and Media Council of Kenya CEO David Omwoyo.
