Emirates is taking steps to make it easier for families with neurodivergent children to fly.

Dubai Air hosted a familiarization flight that included a check-in experience as part of its efforts to help children with autism and other disabilities navigate the airport.

The experience involved 30 children and their parents who exercised using a dedicated autism-friendly route in Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. This includes access to priority lanes at check-in and passport control and fast-track lanes at security. Travelers on this route also receive priority boarding.

Emirates check-in staff and specially trained cabin crew supported the journey.

Flight EK2605 departed DXB at 11:20am and landed an hour later, giving the kids a short experience of boarding a real airplane. This includes announcements from the captain, in-flight services, and the sounds and sights of actual takeoff and landing.

A recent study by the International Certification and Continuing Education Standards Board found that 93 percent of families with neurodiverse children would fly more often if there were more options for autism certification. I found out that there is. Currently, only 13% of families with neurodiverse children surveyed take family vacations. This is because flying is extremely stressful and can cause heightened sensory responses in children.
