ICT Cabinet Minister Eliud Owalo has called on young people to take advantage of the government’s rollout of free Wi-Fi hotspots in public places to get jobs online.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony of the Mawego Institute of Technology Digital Institute in Karachuonyo constituency, Mr Owalo called on youths to embrace the programme, claiming it would help address the dearth of blue-collar jobs.
“Internet connectivity is a top priority in Kenya’s Kwanzaa agenda of providing jobs to youth and women. The government is introducing free Wi-Fi in markets and educational institutions,” Owalo said.
He encouraged them to enroll in training from relevant institutions to acquire the technical skills needed for online employment.
Mr. Owalo stressed that accessing job opportunities in the digital market through online platforms is the way forward for youths.
Mr. Owalo emphasized that “Internet connectivity in both urban and rural areas is a key challenge for Kenya’s Kwanzaa administration to increase employment possibilities for youth.”
Mr. Owalo stressed that the ministry has developed a comprehensive blueprint to ensure every region of the country is connected to the internet.
The government has already made great strides in connecting different locations to the internet through different platforms, especially in Nyanza and Nairobi (City Market).
The government plans to register 25,000 similar facilities across the country.
This initiative aims to leverage the power of digital technology to close the unemployment gap.
By taking advantage of free Wi-Fi hotspots provided by the government, young Kenyans can access online job opportunities and expand their potential in the digital market.
