A major row has erupted since last night’s debate over Rishi Sunak’s claim that Labour will increase everyone’s tax by £2,000 being based on “paperwork”.
Sky Ed Conway, Economics and Data Editor – I would say the claim is dubious, but the Conservative Party stands by the figures 100%.
Meanwhile, Labour says the Conservative plans to abolish NHI would cost £46 billion and be unfunded, but the Chancellor and Chancellor of the Exchequer insist it is just an ambition and not a commitment for the next Parliament.
There, Sir Keir Starmer was asked questions by Sky News. Political reporter Serena Barker Singh With both leaders using similar tactics, it seems this is turning into a dirty election campaign.
The Labour leader stuck to his position, saying: “The Chancellor of the Exchequer has said it is their policy to abolish NHI.”
He added: “By contrast, all of Labour’s plans are fully costed and fully funded and include no tax increases for workers.”
“The Prime Minister lied about our plans.”
Turning to last night’s debate, Sir Keir said voters had “seen a bright spot in the Prime Minister’s character” because “when he was in a tight spot”, he “lied” and “knew he was lying”.
The Labour leader added that he did not make the accusation “lightly”, but said: “He lied about our plans, he lied about the boats, he lied about the waiting list.”
“That’s why the choice in this election is even starker than it was yesterday.”
Asked by Selina whether he wanted the tone of the debate to be one of people calling each other liars, Sir Keir replied: “No, I don’t want that to happen. I want the whole campaign to be conducted without lies.”
“I think that’s really a question that should be asked of the prime minister.”
