Eight hospitalized after carbon monoxide buildup at New Albany business

A carbon monoxide buildup at a New Albany store sent multiple people to the hospital Thursday afternoon. City of New Albany officials said multiple agencies responded to reports of a buildup at Ace Hardware on Charlestown Road. Eight people were taken to nearby hospitals, but officials did not say their condition. Eleven other people were treated at the scene. Fire officials said a propane gas leak inside the store caused high carbon monoxide levels, which they said was caused by machinery that had been running overnight. Crews installed fans and other equipment to remove the propane gas and carbon monoxide from inside the store. The hardware store reopened for business Thursday afternoon.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. —

A carbon monoxide buildup at a New Albany business sent multiple people to the hospital Thursday afternoon.

New Albany city officials said multiple agencies responded to reports of overcrowding at the Ace Hardware store on Charlestown Road.

Eight people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, but officials did not say their condition. Eleven others were treated at the scene.

Fire officials said the store experienced a propane gas leak and high carbon monoxide levels due to machines that had been running overnight.

Crews installed fans and other equipment to remove propane gas and carbon monoxide from the store.

The hardware store reopened Thursday afternoon.
