Discover the story behind culinary entrepreneurship at RMIT University Vietnam

During the first week of the new semester at RMIT Vietnam University, an event called “FOODPRENEURSHIP: A Culinary Journey into Michelin Magic” was held.‘ The lecture was hosted by the Tourism and Hospitality Management program for all RMIT students, graduates and staff, and highlighted the program’s commitment to promoting academic excellence and professional development through interactive sessions between students and industry experts.

Three distinguished guest speakers, including Chef Rene Mare, Senior Gastronomy and Wine Consultant and Michelin Specialist, and two Michelin-starred restaurant owners in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – Chef Tuan Vo of Vị Quê Kitchen and Chef Adrian Chung Yen of Sol Kitchen & Bar – provided the audience with valuable insights from their years of expertise in culinary arts and business strategies. The event was accompanied as exclusive sponsor by the Australian Hospitality Alumni Network in Vietnam (AHA Vietnam) and Club Med, the world-renowned hospitality brand that pioneered the all-inclusive resort concept.

The two-hour panel discussion drew participants into the immersive and dynamic world of foodpreneurship in Vietnam. Through open discussion, guests slowly revealed their personal journeys, from how they started their culinary ventures to the challenges they faced in establishing a successful restaurant. Chef Tuan and Chef Adrian’s insightful sharing of their restaurant’s concept, journey to Michelin star status, and new business management aspects left participants with a renewed enthusiasm and determination to pursue innovation and creativity. Through Chef Rene’s years of expertise, the discussion offered aspiring foodpreneurs practical insights on how to strategically pursue Michelin recognition.

Beyond the informational sessions, the event also provided a platform for networking and collaboration among RMIT students, faculty and industry professionals. Participants had the opportunity to interact face-to-face with speakers, exchange ideas and forge new connections.

Dr Nguyen Quang Trung, Associate Professor and Dean of Management at RMIT Vietnam Business School, emphasised the importance of such events in shaping the future of hospitality and tourism management. “The sessions are designed to inspire your passion, broaden your horizons and equip you with the knowledge to pursue your dreams in tourism, F&B business and entrepreneurship,” said Dr Trung. “The importance of formal education in tourism and hospitality management cannot be overemphasised. Armed with the requisite skills, knowledge and industry insight, you will build the foundation for a successful career.”

Dr Jackie Lay Tin Ong, Senior Program Manager, Tourism and Hospitality Management, also emphasised that “the insights and knowledge gained from this event reaffirm the importance of formal education in tourism and hospitality management and the vital role it plays in developing the industry’s future leaders.”

Going forward, RMIT Vietnam University will remain committed to fostering a culture of innovation and excellence in education, embodying the Tourism and Hospitality Management program’s role as a catalyst for change in Vietnam’s gastronomy industry. By providing students with practical knowledge, industry insights and networking opportunities, RMIT continues to prepare them to become industry leaders and innovators in an evolving entrepreneurial environment.
