Dimension Studios is a real-time virtual production company known for projects such as Sony Pictures’ Whitney Houston biopic. I want to dance with someoneApple TV+ miniseries Master of the Sky, and the upcoming Peacock Gladiator series. The Dying (Peacock) has received a large investment from US private equity firm Growth Catalyst Partners (GCP).
The companies did not disclose financial terms other than describing the capital injection as a “multi-million pound investment” but said it will “accelerate Dimension’s international growth and expand production capacity in key markets including the UK, US and Europe.”
Dimension also touted that the funding will accelerate Dimension’s virtual production pipeline, technology advancements, and education and training “end-to-end as Dimension continues to embrace the future of real-time and artificial intelligence technologies.”
For GCP, “this investment provides an exciting platform to diversify into next-generation film and entertainment productions. Dimension’s virtual production, visualization and virtual human work is already widely adopted by major film, broadcast, sports, music and location-based entertainment productions,” the partners said. GCP’s investment portfolio also includes digital studio and consultancy Squint/Opera, design and brand strategy firm ICrave, and “design and innovation studio” Journey.
In late April, DNEG, the VFX giant that won an Academy Award for films such as “Star Wars Episode I: The Last Jedi” directed by Denis Villeneuve, Sand Dunes Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and again, The Last of Us And season 4 Stranger Thingshas launched a new division called DNEG 360, run by Dimension.
Dimension, which employs 240 people, is working with DNEG 360 and Sunbelt Rentals to officially open a massive virtual production studio complex in west London in the coming weeks. According to the company, “the studio will feature performance, vehicle and volumetric capture stages, as well as one of the largest LED volumes in Europe.”
