Online CBT reduces psychological distress among university students in Hong Kong
A two-year study conducted at a university in Hong Kong found that an internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) program was effective in alleviating mental health problems among students.
Researchers led by Dr. Pan Jiayan, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Baptist University, tested an iCBT program called REST Online to address growing mental health concerns among Hong Kong university students amid a lack of specialist support in the city during the recent pandemic.
The 10-week self-guided program includes eight online modules covering CBT skills briefings and debriefings, case demonstration videos, online assignments and assessments, as well as two counselling sessions with a therapist, either face-to-face or online.
Investigation result The findings, published in the journal Social Work Practice Research, found that after completing the program, student participants experienced “significant” reductions in psychological distress, depression, anxiety, and negative thoughts and feelings.
