In January, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the campaign arm of House Democrats, launched an initiative to reach Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Black, and Latino communities ahead of the 2024 elections. announced a historic eight-figure investment. This monumental investment will help Democrats restore responsible leadership and ensure that the House is regained from Republican chaotic control.
We know that voters of color are critical to Democrats’ progress toward taking back the House. And we don’t take anything for granted. Like all Americans, voters of color are facing rising prices for gas, housing, and groceries, and are struggling to afford medicine and access to the doctor if they get sick. I’m concerned about how our children are protected from gun violence in their schools. As in the past, we will do everything in our power this election to demonstrate to our communities that the Democratic Party not only understands these issues, but is the party that will specifically address them.
Despite their majority, House Democrats sought to address key economic concerns that have always been top of mind for voters of color.
The Inflation Control Act capped the price of insulin for Medicare beneficiaries at $35. Data shows how this positively impacts communities of color, as black, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native adults in the United States have higher rates of diabetes than white Americans.
That’s not all. The Inflation Control Act also lowered monthly health insurance premiums, leading to lower costs and better rates for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Black, and Latino communities.
Working families in this country know that their elected leaders in Washington will deliver on important, top-of-the-line issues like lowering costs, expanding health care, protecting democracy, and respecting essential freedoms. I’m looking forward to it. But this Congress, with Republicans in control, has been one of the least productive in modern history.
There’s no denying what we’ve seen over the past year. It is a complete disregard by the Republican Party to address the concerns of the majority of voters of color and working families. Instead, Republican control of the House has brought us nothing but chaos and dysfunction.
Democrats are committed to countering this trend of dysfunction and helping voters of color understand that this is much more than Republican lip service. Our historic investment in reaching these voters through persuasion and mobilization is a multifaceted and dynamic program. These efforts cover early investments by the DCCC in voter protection and education, understanding nuances within key constituencies across Congressional maps, and combating aggressive and discriminatory voter suppression tactics. leading to the hiring of key staff who will work to develop customized strategies for Target communities of color.
These efforts to meaningfully engage Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Black, and Latino voters include community engagement efforts with an emphasis on voter registration, community events, and voter engagement. This includes hiring local organizers to lead and increase local presence in key elections. grassroots group. This is in addition to robust qualitative and quantitative research to inform paid media persuasion and mobilization programs that cater to voters of color, including digital, radio, mail, and television.
House Democrats know that our broad multiracial coalition is our strength.
Just a few weeks ago, Congressman-elect Tom Suozzi (D) defeated a right-wing Republican in a special election for New York’s 3rd Congressional District, putting Democrats on a path to victory for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Suozzi. is essential to Pacific Islander and Latinx communities. It was crucial in a district where nearly 1 in 5 voters are Asian American, and a sign of the outreach efforts he plans to do in other battleground districts.
Alongside the investment from the Suozzi campaign, ASPIRE PAC (the Political Arm of Asian American and Pacific Islander Representatives, chaired by one of us) will support Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Asian Americans during the special election. Invested significantly in outreach and engagement with Pacific Islanders. This includes co-hosting multi-lingual media roundtables, leveraging the ASPIRE affiliate network for targeted phone banking, and placing language digital banner ads in key outlets.
ASPIRE Chairman and his members also campaigned alongside Suozzi in the district, including caucus vice chair Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.).
It is no exaggeration to say that this election will be a defining moment for our democracy. Democrats fighting to give working families what they need to grow and live safely, and defunding women’s reproductive freedom, cutting services to veterans, and defunding law enforcement and the gut manufacturing industry. That would be a clear choice among Republicans who would vote for the suspension.
Our efforts in the New York special election will restore the House of Representatives to normalcy through historic support for communities of color and elect Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (New York) as the first Black Speaker of the House. It shows that you can make history. So that we can get back to work serving all Americans.
Rep. Grace Meng (DN.Y) is the Chair of ASPIRE PAC. Rep. Gregory Meeks (D.Y.) is the Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus PAC. Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.) is the chair of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus BOLD PAC.
