Once-popular, polarizing trends like skinny jeans and low-rise bottoms often spark opinions from those who aren’t as keen: Millennials. But are capris, an early ’80s staple, making a comeback these days? That wasn’t the case at all — well, at least not for Alyssa Wasko. Alyssa Wasko, the brainchild behind Los Angeles-based brand Donnie, was perhaps one of the first designers to jump on the now-cult up-and-coming silhouette last September — the Pedal Pusher Favorite.

“I thought it was for a very niche, fashion-conscious clientele,” she told TZR over the phone. “Given these particular trends, I kind of know that there’s going to be some backlash and a lot of attention. And I was well prepared for that.” But mostly style gurus She has received (mostly) positive reactions thanks to support from Leandra Medine Cohen, who is “Ironically, of the items she chose for the collection, they were her favorite.” Thanks to Medine Cohen’s endorsement, the label sold out of the pants and has already restocked them (though , the gray version worn by the influencer is not yet available at this time).

Gilda Ambrosio was also an early adopter of this trend. In February, the It Girl and The Attico co-founder stepped out at the Milan Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2024 show in a sleek black pair, teamed with a button-down and chic rhinestone-heavy heels. did. And celebrities are also interested in their looks. For example, supermodel Gigi Hadid is a Capristian. The Guest in Residence founder rocked her denim look last July at a friend’s birthday gathering at Jack’s on His Bond in New York City. Another fan? “Kendall Jenner was recently spotted styling her capri pants with Alosoft’s iconic ’90s bra and ballet flats for a chic, coordinated ensemble,” says Alo. Abby Gordon, vice president of design and merchandising, explains. “Our customers particularly appreciate the Caprice’s blend of studio functionality and street style, with adaptability and practicality for everyday use.”

And if the spring 2024 runways are any indication, luxury designers are also helping push the needle toward a more elevated modern version of the Caprice. In New York, Tory Burch started with flared gray bottoms, paired with a slightly brighter blazer (complete with her latest brooch!). In Italy, Ferragamo showed off an authentic slim-cut black style paired with a zip-up turtleneck top. Near the end of the month, during a show in the City of Lights, Coperni also debuted a black iteration worn alongside a pinstriped blue and white button-down and structured blazer.

If you need more styling advice, Wasko is here to help. The designer says that capris can err on the sporty side, so he suggests offsetting the bottoms with a feminine shoe like a pair of vintage Manolo heels. And to balance out the fitted silhouette, she likes to pair it with an oversized sweatshirt or jacket on top. Meanwhile, Sonia Mosseri, founder of Still Here (a New York denim brand launching looks in May), loves dressing up her capris with a blazer and flashy boots. Or, for a more casual, tomboyish style, she pairs socks with a crew neck and boat shoes. “Easy to style up or down for day or night,” adds the expert.

Considering he’s currently working on another Capri silhouette, Wasco clearly doesn’t expect this trend to slow down this summer. “We’re working towards next year,” she reveals. And even if the bottoms aren’t selling yet, Wasko has a strong feeling that will change. “Traditionally, people are often very resistant and fearful of trends, but a year later, more people are willing to try them out. So this is just I think this is just the beginning.”

With that insight in mind, keep scrolling for seven ways to rock capris, no matter where you currently stand on the trend.

enjoy accessories

For crisp spring days, pair black capris with a sleeveless brown blazer. (Contrary to popular belief, two neutrals do ) Spice up your understated duo with accessories like statement belts and clear wedges from model and content creator Maya Stepper.

show your skin

The sun is out and your belly is out? That seems to be the motto of fashion girls when warmer weather arrives. If you want to show some skin, try pairing your bottoms with a cropped blouse or a T-shirt. Complete your slightly revealing look with chunky heeled sandals and a shiny gold necklace or belt.

Select print

This season’s look is definitely all black, but you can also try a printed capri style. For example, polka dots and floral motifs can be incredibly chic when paired with a pared-back, neutral jacket and bright strappy sandals, as influencer Anna Saber proved.

play with proportions

Balance close-fitting bottoms with puff-sleeved tops to add interest to your outfit. From there, consider opting for a sophisticated neutral palette from head to toe by finishing with a black leather bag and complementing your open-toed heels.

try something unexpected

Here is what the aforementioned pedal pusher as seen on Medine Cohen looks like. In true fashion, the street style star paired her bottoms with unexpected styles, including a western-inspired fringe on her jacket and a long pearl necklace. Pointed white mules added a sophisticated element to the ensemble.

wrap a belt

Keep your Capri outfit effortless with elevated basics. Come summer, you can’t go wrong with a tank with thin spaghetti straps. If you love the return of ballet flats, opt for a pair of versatile black shoes. You probably don’t need a belt with your pants, but why not wear one for a little extra flair?

layer up

Not sure how to style your Caprice on a chilly spring afternoon? Layer it with a bomber jacket (choose a light or heavy style, depending on the weather forecast) and a long-sleeved top. Finally, heeled thong sandals dress up the relaxed style.
