Business is booming at Omaha Baseball Village, vendors say

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Tough weather is a fact of life when hosting an event in the heartland in mid-June, and CWS officials wasted no time Tuesday night, postponing the game, scheduled for 6 p.m., to Wednesday morning.

With games starting at 10 a.m., there’s not much room for tailgating; ticket-less crowds gather around the TVs, and the cheers from inside the stadium make more sense.

For business owners, triple-headers pose a challenge in how they plan their day.

“We had no idea how to prepare,” said Matt Baughman of Greek To Me. “We were ready by 8 a.m., but we weren’t in a big rush.”

This marks the second year Greek To Me has opened a food truck in the heart of Omaha Baseball Village.

Downtown businesses took advantage of a rare CWS triple-header in Omaha on Wednesday.

“Gyros are very popular because there aren’t many options other than hot dogs and burgers,” Bowman said.

The food truck offers authentic flavors, and some customers were even asked to take an informal quiz to test the taste.

“Greek people come to the truck and speak Greek,” Chris Antonopoulos said. “My wives are like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about,’ so I go to the register and start speaking Greek.”

Nitro Ice Cream has been serving food downtown since the final day at Rosenblatt Stadium, halfway through the CWS, and business is good.

“It was crazy,” Nitro’s Tony Lin said. “I ran around it twice. It was a lot of fun.”

That was especially true during Saturday’s four-hour rain stoppage.

“It was a record Saturday for our food truck,” Antonopoulos said. “It was absolutely amazing. Our sales are up about 25 percent this year.”

If you can’t find what you’re looking for at the merchandise tent, just ask a salesperson – they might have something you could use as a gift.

“I have a cup holder on my apron in case I want to grab a beer after work,” Lin says, “and a bottle opener in case I have a neck bottle.”

The area around Charles Schwab Field continues to expand each year, adding new attractions for fans, and next year will see one of the biggest celebrations ever as Omaha celebrates the 75th anniversary of “The Greatest Show on Dirt.”
