FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) — There’s a revolutionary new technology that could save animals’ lives.
A new drug has been proven to cure cancer in animals, including dogs and horses, and one of the places that uses it regularly is right here in Fort Wayne.
The product, called IsoPet, treats cancerous tumors in animals, and CEO Mike Kolenko said, “It’s a wonder why no one has invented this before.”
Kolenko says he’s testing the idea with a variety of animals: “Cats, dogs, horses, and now we’re starting to branch out into exotic animals, which is a new area for zoos,” he says.
The product works by injecting it into cancerous tumors, where the material enters the tumor and “we have a lot of data showing that it gels within seconds, trapping the particles and staying in place.”
Their data shows a success rate of 80 to 90 percent. The gel uses low levels of radiation to remove the cancer.
Indian Creek Animal Hospital is one of eight hospitals nationwide that have access to the medication, and Dr. Kevin Cawood of Indian Creek said, “This is a breakthrough technology and I knew it could help my clients and patients.”
Cawood says getting an IsoPet was a no-brainer, “I went looking, I saw it, I saw they already had the license, and I knew I had to pass the test and do all the other stuff that was required. I just accepted it as a challenge,” he explains.
You can take your pet home immediately after treatment. Cawood says, “It’s safer for the pet in the long run because we’re not putting a ton of other chemicals in their system, so the dosage is very low and it’s safe for me and for them to be around.”
But Cawood says the most rewarding part is seeing the smiles on families’ faces. “There’s no other product that can do this, so when you put it on and know it’s working, it’s just an amazing feeling. I believe this is one technology that can be used to improve the quality of life for many patients, to give them relief from pain and enable them to remain at home as part of the family for longer.”
The cost of the treatment varies but is around $10,000. Not all pets with cancer qualify for this treatment. This treatment is only applicable to cancerous tumors.
It cannot be used on cancers that get into the bloodstream, so it is important to consult with your vet before proceeding with treatment.
IsoPet’s developers hope to roll out the product under a different name, RadioGel, and to start treating humans with it around this time next year.
