The Conservative Party is “heading towards defeat” in the general election and needs to improve its offer to voters, Suella Braverman warned this morning.
The former home secretary said he hoped the Conservative Party would “reverse course” and be bolder on key issues such as tax and immigration.
Asked about what the Conservatives could expect from the contest, Mrs Braverman told LBC: I’m very concerned about what the poll after poll will show. It is my job to be honest, to tell the truth, even if it may be uncomfortable, and as Home Secretary I have tried to fulfill this.
“I owe it to the people who sent me to Congress, and I owe it to you. So the honest truth is that we are headed for defeat in the general election, to say the least. I would like to see a change in policy and an improved offer to the British public.
“Ultimately, this government is not doing enough on tax cuts, immigration, national security, social cohesion and extremism.
“We need to go further and reassure the British public that we are on Britain’s side, that we are serious about stopping boats, and that we are serious about curbing unprecedented levels of illegal immigration. We need to prove that, and unfortunately we haven’t been able to do that.” ”
