Suela Braverman has refused to rule out supporting Rishi Sunak’s ouster if the Rwanda plan fails.
The former home secretary said he “fully expects” Mr Sunak to lead the Conservative Party at the next general election, but was undecided on whether he would support a leadership challenge against him.
Asked if she would support a challenge between now and the next general election, Mrs Braverman told the BBC: “As I said, I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
Mrs Braverman, who was told that was not a “no”, said: “The Prime Minister will certainly lead us to the next general election. I have a lot of concerns about the path he takes.”
Asked again if she supported his leadership challenge, she said: “I have urged him many times to change course. I believe we are not delivering policies or solutions that the British public will support and unfortunately no matter what opinion polls you look at at the moment, It suggests that Britain is headed for defeat.”
Mrs Braverman said she believed Mr Sunak’s Rwanda bill was “fatally flawed” and would not lead to regular migrant deportation flights taking off.
Mr Sunak is expected to hold a press conference in Downing Street this morning to urge the House of Lords to stop blocking the bill ahead of a big vote this afternoon.
