WASHINGTON — Bob Woodward knows a thing or two about political scandals that could bring down a president.

The famed journalist, who helped expose the Watergate scandal in 1972, told MSNBC on Friday that President Joe Biden’s debate performance was “so bad, so awful” that something must have happened to ruin it.

“I think the answer here is to report and to actively seek an explanation for what happened here,” Woodward said. “We don’t want it to come out in some book or memoir a few years from now, or even a decade from now. We need to know now.”

During a break during the debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump on June 27, 2024, in Atlanta.

Woodward said it was “inevitable” that calls for Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

“His performance, I sat there and watched, and I couldn’t believe it. I said, ‘Not only is this a political hydrogen bomb for the Democratic Party, but what just happened?’ And looking back, he had been holed up for days preparing. He understood the importance of it. A seasoned politician like Biden will internalize and rehearse his lines. I’m sure that was the case, but somehow he was off his game.”
