Bayern Munich board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed that Vincent Kompany has been selected as the club’s new manager.
After failing to keep Burnley in the Premier League, the Belgian has surprisingly become the frontrunner to take over as Bayern Munich manager.
The German giants have been searching for a new manager for months since deciding to part ways with head coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the 2023/24 season.
They initially targeted Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso but after being turned down by several managers it now appears they have their sights set on a potential 50th player.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was also rumoured to be a potential successor to Tuchel, who is tipped to take over as Red Devils manager, but Kompany is all but confirmed to be the new Bayern manager.
Pep Guardiola meets with Bayern Munich officials
Everyone knows that Bayern are in negotiations with Kompany, but the decision to appoint him was confirmed by the club’s former CEO Rummenigge, who now sits on the Munich board.
Rummenigge confirmed that the club’s director of football Max Eberle had chosen the Burnley manager and said he had spoken to former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola about the Belgian’s coaching qualities.
“Our directors have decided to appoint Vincent Kompany as the new manager,” he confirmed. “We are ready to finalize the details, after which an official announcement will be made.”
Rummenigge added: “Pep Guardiola also helped us with the Kompany thing. He rates Vincent highly as a talented manager.”
“Pep knows Vincent very well so his opinion was really appreciated.”
Guardiola’s obviously glowing recommendation helped his former player land one of the biggest jobs in football.
Bayern want contract extension with Liverpool target
Meanwhile, Bayern are reportedly interested in extending the contract of winger Leroy Sane.
Sane has been linked with a move to Premier League club Liverpool for the past year or so, while Mohamed Salah’s future remains uncertain.
However, the former Manchester City winger looks more likely to sign a new contract with Bayern Munich rather than join Liverpool.
According to reports in Germany, officials are keen to extend the player’s contract, which is currently due to expire in 2025.
Discussions are said to have already taken place between Sane and club officials, but a final decision is unlikely to be made until after this summer’s European Championships.
The report adds that Sane’s former team-mate Kompany is set to be announced as Bayern manager “no later than Wednesday of this week”.
