According to a report by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Brazil is currently the sixth largest avocado producer in the world, with the area under cultivation significantly increasing by 50% from 2016 to 2020. This growth from 10.9 thousand hectares to 16.4 thousand hectares is part of a broader trend of increased avocado production aimed at satisfying both international and domestic markets. Domestic market demand is particularly noteworthy, with consumption rates increasing.
Accounting for 83.2% of national production, the southeastern region leads Brazil’s avocado production, with São Paulo and Minas Gerais being the main producers. Nevertheless, expansion efforts are not limited to these regions, and progress in avocado cultivation is also being made in other states, such as Ceará.
According to MarÃa Cecilia Whateley, president and director of the Brazilian Avocado Association, focusing on export markets requires high quality and certification of the fruit. She emphasized the non-commodity nature of avocados and the need for prudent production practices to meet market demand, and emphasized the importance of marketing and communication strategies in this sector.
