Are Kim Mulkey and the Tigers inclined to commit to the transfer portal?

Kim Mulkey and the LSU staff continue to evaluate the NCAA transfer portal while searching for a point guard for the 2024-25 season.

April is a big month for the program, as recruiting begins in several different areas, including the AAU Basketball portal and recruiting live period.

For now, the team is committed to finding a point guard to lead the Tigers next season, and there are several options available in the portal.

According to multiple reports, the Tigers visited former Arizona State guard Kailyn Gilbert on campus this week as she heads to Baton Rouge for personnel.

Gilbert, one of Portal’s top guards, averaged 15.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range in his second year with the Wildcats.

An elite-level scorer, she has proven her worth in this area, but continuing to hone her defensive skill set will be key.

According to multiple reports, the Tigers may be in the trend of acquiring Gilbert, and after speaking with a person familiar with the situation, there appears to be mutual interest between the two sides.

Will Gilbert jump out and make his decision known? Only time will tell, but LSU remains in touch with the coveted Arizona guard.

But Gilbert isn’t the only guard LSU is looking to acquire through the NCAA transfer portal.

The Tigers have a few other tricks up their sleeve. Mulkey and Co. will bring Clemson transfer guard Ruby Whitehorn on a visit to Baton Rouge next week.

According to multiple news outlets, Whitehorn has visited Florida State and Baylor, and LSU will get a crack at the coveted guard in the coming days. Officials confirmed to LSU Country that the City of Whitehorn will be in town for officials April 26-27.

LSU plans to promote the initiative during a city trip. Whitehorn is a player at the top of the Tigers’ transfer portal big board, and we strongly believe she will be a key player in the rotation if they can successfully enlist her services.

Whitehorn averaged 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Tigers in his second season at Clemson, and LSU clearly sees the former five-star recruit as a key player going forward.

As a non-contact transfer, Whitehorn is in control of the recruiting process, and LSU is making a push here with both sides in contact.

Another guard LSU has been in contact with is Dejah Kelly, a transfer from North Carolina, according to officials.

The three-time All-ACC first-team selection remains an option with the Tar Heels, but the Tigers are looking to capitalize on her performance.

A 2020 McDonald’s All-American, Kelly was a five-star recruit out of high school before dominating at North Carolina.

This past season, Kelly averaged 16.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game and was again named first-team All-ACC.

LSU continues to focus on a guard trio with the program in the market for a lead guard, depth in the wing rotation and a valuable forward moving forward.

LSU Country will be getting updates on the Tigers’ transfer portal over the next few weeks as they look to assemble a new championship-caliber roster.
