Apple may not be the loudest voice in the AI space, but recent moves suggest the company is preparing to play a key role. The tech giant quietly acquired Paris-based AI startup Datakalab in December 2023, Bloomberg reported.

Datakalab, which specializes in data compression and image analysis, has previously worked with the French government on pandemic-related projects focused on mask-wearing compliance and social distancing monitoring.

The appeal of Datakalab’s work is perhaps its commitment to privacy and ethical data use, which aligns well with Apple’s long-standing focus on user privacy. Additionally, Datakalab’s entertainment efforts in measuring audience engagement through facial recognition could provide insight into Apple’s product optimization strategy.

Apple has so far been tight-lipped about its AI plans, but recent developments suggest its involvement is increasing. The launch of the M3 MacBook Air, touted as “the world’s best AI-enabled consumer laptop,” according to CNET, is a significant step and marks a clearer integration of AI technology into Apple products. .

Expectations are high for Apple’s upcoming releases, especially iOS 18 and macOS 15, which are expected to introduce AI capabilities across a variety of applications. As reported by MacRumors, there has been a lot of speculation about possible implementations, including his AI chatbot within Siri and enhanced photo and video editing features.

Interestingly, Apple’s interest in on-device AI processing outlined in a December 2023 research paper suggests a move away from cloud-based solutions and a focus on speed and privacy. While it remains unclear how exactly Datakalab’s work will be integrated, it’s clear that Apple is willing to dig deeper into his AI technology.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple plans to announce more details at the Worldwide Developer Conference, with further developments promised in June. For now, the acquisition of Datakalab highlights Apple’s strategic play in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
