Apple acquires Parisian AI startup Datakalab

Apple has strengthened its push into artificial intelligence (AI) with the acquisition of Paris-based AI technology startup Datakalab.

The acquisition was completed on December 17th and was quietly mentioned in a filing with the European Commission, reporting that: french media.It’s part of Apple Reported push To AI.

Datakalab was founded in 2016 by Xavier Fischer and Lucas Fischer and specializes in creating efficient AI algorithms that consume less power and are ideal for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. According to the company, LinkedIn pageDatakalab describes itself as a company that “offers industry-leading compression and adaptation to implement fast, cost-effective, and accurate integrated computer vision.”

The move could be part of Apple’s broader plan to bring cutting-edge AI capabilities to its devices, starting with the upcoming iOS 18.

PYMNTS reported Apple researchers announced they have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) system, ReALM (Reference Resolution as Language Modeling), that can transform the way voice assistants understand and respond to ambiguous references and contextual cues. .

ReALM turns the complex task of interpreting screen-based visual cues into a simpler language modeling challenge using advanced large-scale language models. The software is part of a broader effort to improve AI-driven voice communications, which could power a variety of commercial applications.

Dan Faghella, an AI researcher not affiliated with Apple, commented on the potential impact of these advances. to PYMNTS: “On the other hand, many chatbots currently cause customer dissatisfaction. However, if we can develop AI systems that quickly and effectively answer simple questions and improve the customer experience, we can improve customer loyalty and This could lead to increased sales.”

According to a report on March 18th Bloomberg reportingApple is currently in talks with Google to integrate Google’s AI engine into the iPhone.

Sources close to the situation have revealed that Apple is considering licensing Google’s Gemini AI model to enhance the functionality of its next iPhone software features due out this year. Additionally, the report states that Apple is also considering his OpenAI options and is considering incorporating its AI models.
