Three people killed after being caught in a low tide in the Florida Panhandle, a day after a couple drowned off Florida’s Atlantic coast

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Three Alabama men were caught in a rip current and killed while heading out for an evening swim shortly after arriving at a beach in the Florida Panhandle, authorities said. The deaths Friday evening were the latest in a string of deaths in Florida, including a drowning of a Pennsylvania couple elsewhere in the state. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office said in an online post that the three men from Birmingham, Alabama, were caught in a rip current shortly after entering the water. They were found separately by emergency personnel and pronounced dead at a hospital. The Pennsylvania couple were vacationing with their six children when they were caught in a rip current off Hutchinson Island on the Atlantic coast, authorities said.

Inside Out 2 breaks record by grossing $100 million in second weekend

NEW YORK (AP) — The second weekend was just as gratifying for “Inside Out 2.” The Pixar sequel grossed $100 million in ticket sales in its second weekend, setting a new record for an animated sequel in theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. Only six movies have had better second weekends. The previous best second weekend for an animated film was “Super Mario Bros. The Movie” at $92 million. Just a week and a half later, “Inside Out 2” has become the highest-grossing movie of 2024 so far, grossing $724.4 million worldwide. In about a week, “Inside Out 2” will likely break the $1 billion mark, making it the first movie to do so since “Barbie.”

4-year-old California boy found safe after going missing from campsite and being alone in wilderness for 22 hours

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A 4-year-old California boy who wandered off from a campground in the Sierra National Forest has been found safe after spending 22 hours alone in the wilderness. A search and rescue team of about 50 police officers and volunteers was dispatched about 11 a.m. Thursday after the boy was reported missing from the heavily wooded campground north of Fresno. The boy, from Torrance, near Los Angeles, was last seen wearing shorts and a T-shirt. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department said the boy was found unharmed Friday morning near a lake about a quarter-mile from the Rancheria campground. The boy, who was hungry and tired, was reunited with his parents.

Blue Jays’ Orelvis Martinez suspended 80 games for drug use two days after major league debut

NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug clomiphene. The announcement came two days after the 22-year-old Martinez made his major league debut. Martinez issued a statement Sunday apologizing to the Blue Jays and fans and saying he visited a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic and was prescribed treatments that included banned substances because he was trying to start a family with his girlfriend. Martinez has been on the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster since November 2022. He was 1-for-3 with 1 strikeout in Friday’s game against Cleveland.

Vogue World celebrates French style and the Olympics in style as menswear season closes in Paris

PARIS (AP) — On International Olympic Day, Vogue World took over the final day of Paris Fashion Week menswear collections with an Olympic-themed show and spectacle. The unusual event, held Sunday at the iconic Place Vendôme, blended sports, French fashion and the pure, unadulterated glamour of the last century, marking 100 years since the last Olympics in Paris in 1924. 1894 also marks the day that the International Olympic Committee was founded by French aristocrat Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics. The show was a high-energy collection extravaganza, like a sophisticated Broadway musical, with fabulous clothes by France’s top designers matching different sports with different eras and styles.

Kylian Mbappe is getting used to his new mask ahead of Poland match, team-mates say

PADERBORN, Germany (AP) — France captain Kylian Mbappe is getting used to wearing a new protective mask ahead of a possible return against Poland at Euro 2024. According to teammate Aurélien Chouameni, Mbappe is “starting to get used to” the mask and is “really looking forward to” France’s next match on Tuesday. Mbappe did not play in Friday’s 0-0 draw with the Netherlands after breaking his nose in France’s opening 1-0 win over Austria. Chouameni also suggested France was working on improving its finishing after World Cup runners-up scored just one goal in their first two Euro 2024 group stage matches.

Chicago’s iconic ‘Bean’ sculpture reopens to visitors after nearly a year of construction

CHICAGO (AP) — One of Chicago’s most popular tourist attractions, “The Bean,” has reopened to the public after nearly a year of construction. City officials say the work includes new stairs, accessible ramps, a waterproofing system and a complete reconstruction of the podium around the sculpture. The bean-shaped sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor, officially called “Cloud Gate,” weighs 110 tons (99.8 metric tons). It’s a popular spot for tourists to hang out near Michigan Avenue, especially for photos and selfies, thanks to its reflective surface inspired by liquid mercury. Different sections of the sculpture offer views of the city’s skyscrapers.

Taylor Swift kicks off UK Hellas tour, with some fans wondering if the singer is ready to say ‘Goodbye, London’

LONDON (AP) — Taylor Swift fans enjoy interpreting the singer-songwriter’s lyrics to find out about her love life and her inner thoughts. But it didn’t take long for Swift’s British fans to listen closely to her latest album to realize she’s grown to dislike London since making it her adopted home. The album’s fifth track is called “So Long, London.” Swift’s visit to London this weekend for her Eras Tour has some fans wondering if it’s the start of a long breakup. London is showing its love, with murals and tributes to Swift installed near Wembley Stadium. The first show on Friday drew 88,000 people, including Prince William and his two children.

Easy recipe for onigiri using salted plums

TOKYO (AP) — Onigiri are balls of rice with something inside, similar to how a sandwich has something between two slices of bread. And just as nearly all Americans make and eat sandwiches, most Japanese eat onigiri too. Here’s the basics: Wet your hands with salted water. Take a handful of cooked rice. Place a umeboshi (salted Japanese plum) on top of it. Take another bowl of rice in your other hand and place it on top of the rice and umeboshi. Cup your hands together and gently crush the rice. Rotate the rice in your hands a few times so it forms a triangle. Roll it in nori (dried seaweed) or eat it as is.

A shiny monolith was lifted from a mountain outside Las Vegas. How it got there remains a mystery.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A strange monolith found jutting out of the rocks in a remote mountain range near Las Vegas has been removed by authorities. Its discovery over the weekend and swift removal have revived a pandemic-era mystery that captured people’s imaginations when similar objects began appearing around the world. How it got there remains a mystery. Members of the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team found the object over the weekend near Gass Peak, part of the vast Desert National Wildlife Refuge where bighorn sheep and desert tortoises roam.
