NEW YORK (AP) — Police in upstate New York say an officer shot and killed a teenager who was fleeing the scene while pointing a replica gun. Utica police said Saturday that the shooting happened Friday night after officers stopped two young men. Police said one of the young men ran away and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers. Officers later recovered a replica handgun with a detachable magazine from the scene, police said. Police have not identified the officer or the 13-year-old who died. Police Chief Mark Williams said the New York State Attorney General’s Office will lead the investigation into the shooting to determine whether it was justified.

WELLFLET, Mass. (AP) — Animal rescuers were trying to move dozens of dolphins away from shallow waters around Cape Cod after they stranded there. Rescuers in Massachusetts found a pod of 10 Pacific white-sided dolphins swimming dangerously in shallow waters at dawn Saturday and successfully drove them into deeper waters, reports the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Rescuers also found another pod of 25 dolphins swimming close to shore near Eastham, where efforts to remove them continued throughout the morning as the tide went out. Ten dolphins died after stranding on The Gut (Great Island) on the Herring River in Wellfleet on Friday.
Former Northeastern University lab director found guilty of staging fake explosion on Boston campus
A former lab director at Northeastern University has been convicted of staging a fake explosion on its Boston campus and lying to federal investigators about what happened. Jason Duhaime, of San Antonio, was found guilty Friday of three counts. Duhaime, 46, could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each charge. Two lawyers representing Duhaime withdrew from the case in January, court documents showed. The public defenders who represented them could not be reached for comment Saturday.
Driver charged with DUI in New York nail salon crash: 4 dead, 9 injured
NEW YORK (AP) — Long Island police say they have arrested a man on suspicion of drunk driving after authorities say he crashed his SUV into a nail salon, killing four people and injuring nine. Suffolk County police said Saturday that Steven Schwallie was speeding through a parking lot when he crashed his SUV into the windshield of Hawaii Nail & Spa in Deer Park about 4:30 p.m. Friday. Schwallie was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. Spokespeople for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and police said Saturday they did not have contact information for his attorney.

A Texas jury found 35-year-old George Alvarez guilty of eight counts of drunk driving manslaughter on Friday. Alvarez lost control of his vehicle after running a red light in May 2023, authorities said. He had cocaine in his system at the time. The deadly scene occurred in Brownsville, long a migrant hub. Alvarez was also convicted of 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
South African researchers test use of nuclear technology to curb rhino poaching
MOKOPANE, South Africa (AP) — South African researchers have injected radioactive material into the horns of 20 rhinos as part of a research project to reduce poaching. The idea is that radiation detectors already installed at the border will detect the horns and help authorities catch poachers and traffickers. The study, which involved veterinarians and nuclear experts, starts by anesthetizing the animals and drilling holes in their horns to carefully insert the nuclear material. Female capybara headed to Florida as part of breeding program for large South American rodent
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A female capybara has come to a Florida zoo as part of a breeding program to boost the population of the large South American rodents. The 10-month-old capybara, Iyari, was transferred to the Palm Beach Zoo & Nature Conservation Society in May from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. She is being kept in a mixed-species habitat while zoo officials slowly get her used to the park’s 2-year-old male capybara, Zeus. Capybaras have a gestation period of about five months and give birth to an average of four pups. Palm Beach Zoo officials say they don’t know when the baby capybara will be born. It all depends on how long it takes for Iyari and Zeus to get to know each other, they say.
