Amazon is doing away with its “Just Walk Out” technology, which allowed customers to shop and leave the store without going to the checkout, which it claims is better in Amazon Fresh stores.
The changes, announced Tuesday, only affect the Seattle-based company’s Amazon Fresh grocery stores, not its Amazon Go small convenience stores. It also won’t affect the more than 130 third-party retailers that partner with Amazon to use “Just Walk Out” technology in locations such as airports, university stores and cafes, an Amazon spokesperson said. Amazon said in an email that it made the decision to discontinue the technology, which is available in Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores, after receiving customer feedback.
“We have spent a lot of time last year redesigning many of our Amazon Fresh stores to provide a more value, convenience, and selection-rich overall shopping experience. “We’re seeing positive results, including an increase in shopping satisfaction scores and purchases,” Amazon spokeswoman Jessica Martin said in a statement.
“Customers also say that Just Walk Out has given them the benefit of not having to wait in line at the checkout line, but they also love being able to easily find products and sales near them, see their receipts as they shop, and see how much they spent. “We also heard from customers that they wanted the ability to save money while shopping in-store,” she said.
Which Amazon Fresh stores are affected?
The company says it has more than 40 Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S., 27 of which have Just Walk Out technology and will migrate to Amazon Dash Cart. The remaining stores are already using Amazon Dash Cart, the retailer said.
Just Walk Out technology will continue to be available in Amazon Go stores, smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the UK, and a growing number of third-party retailers. There are over 130 third-party Just Walk Out technology locations in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, with new locations opening every month, including travel retail, sports stadiums, entertainment venues, conference centers, theme parks, and convenience stores. . including hospitals and university campuses, Amazon said.
How does Amazon Dash Cart work?
Amazon says shoppers using Amazon Dash Cart, a smart shopping cart, can scan a QR code in the Amazon app to start browsing the store. Dash Cart combines computer vision and sensor fusion to help identify what is placed in the cart, the retailer said. Amazon says shoppers pick up items as they normally would, scan them with one of Dash Cart’s cameras, and add them to their cart.
