Alpine Space Ventures closes $185 million fund targeting space startups

European Venture Capital Firms Alpine Space Ventures The firm closed its first fund with 170 million euros ($185 million) in capital targeting space-related startups.

The fund will target Series A funding rounds for companies in the space sector, primarily in Europe, but also in the US and other countries. The fund has a particular focus on companies working on the industrialization of the space sector, as well as hardware and software solutions around connectivity and data.

A concentrated portfolio of no more than 10 to 15 companies will receive up to €5 million ($5.4 million) initially, with funding reserved for follow-on rounds. Alpine Space Ventures’ portfolio includes giant satellite builder K2 Space, manufacturer Reflex Aerospace, electric thruster company Morpheus Space, pressure tank startup Blackwave and solar power provider Source Energy.

The Fund’s founding partners are Bulent Altan, an early SpaceX leader, and investor and entrepreneur Yoram Volklein. The Fund’s investor base includes over 20 early SpaceX employees, as well as the European Investment Fund (EIF), the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), and several prominent family offices.

“First and foremost, we are investing in the best team with a deep understanding of the market, a customer-centric mindset and the ability to rapidly iterate on technology solutions with the aim of building the best commercial solutions possible,” Altan commented.
