Joey’s story began in the lush forests of Canada, where a group of conservationists first discovered him in 2021. His striking white fur immediately caught their attention, and they misidentified him as a polar bear that had somehow wandered far from its natural habitat. Concerned for his well-being, they believed Joey’s rightful home was the Arctic, and decided to relocate him there. Joey was administered anesthesia and airlifted into the icy wilderness of the Arctic.

Upon arrival, Joey found himself in a completely unfamiliar environment. The harsh icy terrain of the Arctic was in stark contrast to the forests he was used to. Joey struggled to adapt to his new environment and found it difficult to hunt and fish in the icy waters. Despite these difficulties, he managed to survive, albeit with great difficulty.
It didn’t take long for local Arctic wildlife experts to realize that the joey was not a polar bear. The joey’s behavior and physical characteristics were clearly different from native polar bears. For example, its fur was yellowish rather than pure white, and even as an adult it was small compared to the Arctic giants. After consulting a database, they discovered that the joey was in fact an albino Canadian grizzly bear. Efforts were made to return the joey to its native habitat, with him being carefully transported by helicopter.
But Joey’s ordeals didn’t end there. In 2022, he was mistaken for a polar bear by another conservation group again. This time, he was found wandering near a small town in Alaska. The locals, unfamiliar with the concept of an albino grizzly bear, assumed Joey was a lost polar bear and called wildlife authorities. Joey was anesthetized and sent back to the Arctic.
This cycle of mistaken identity and relocation continued over the next few years, with Joey being sent to the Arctic and back a total of five times. Each time he was returned to the Arctic, Joey faced the same challenge of adapting to an environment that was not his own. Despite his life being interrupted so many times, Joey showed incredible resilience and adaptability. His story became widely known, and he was affectionately dubbed “the unluckiest bear in the world.”
In 2024, Joey’s plight attracted worldwide attention. His repeated misidentifications highlighted the need for improved education and training for conservationists and wildlife protectionists. Efforts were made to raise awareness of the existence of albino grizzly bears and the importance of accurately identifying wildlife before taking action.
Joey’s life has been full of unexpected challenges, but it has also brought about positive change. His story has raised awareness of the unique challenges faced by albino animals and the importance of proper wildlife management. Joey, an albino grizzly bear who was constantly mistaken for a polar bear, has become a symbol of resilience and the need for understanding and care in the treatment of wild animals.
