2023 was the most distributed year for travel, with Airbnb guests traveling to more than 100,000 cities and towns in more than 200 countries and territories. As guests continue to explore new destinations, more people than ever before have the opportunity to enjoy the economic benefits of home sharing. In the U.S. alone, hosts earned more than $24 billion in supplemental income in 2023, helping them make ends meet, save for retirement and pay their mortgage.

To help communities around the world benefit from tourism, Airbnb launched the Entrepreneur Academy in 2017. The Airbnb Entrepreneur Academy introduces people from diverse and underrepresented communities to hosting on the Airbnb platform. Through the Academy, we work with local organizations to develop customized education programs that help participants learn how to become entrepreneurs by turning a spare room or property into a secondary income source on Airbnb.

Since its launch in 2017, the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy has helped more than 4,500 participants from diverse and underrepresented communities in 12 countries learn how to host on Airbnb.

Airbnb Entrepreneur Academy expansion in 2024

In 2024, the Academy will scale by partnering with more than 30 organizations, including the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) in the United States, Black BRAND, Washington Area Community Investment Fund (Wacif), UNESCO and World Wildlife Fund in Mexico, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, Global Himalayan Expeditions in India, Central University of Technology, Free State, South Africa, and the University of Johannesburg.

All of these partners support our commitment to empowering diverse and underrepresented communities through the tourism economy. Airbnb and the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center are providing funding to these organizations and supporting existing entrepreneurial training programs and host academies to help the communities they serve take advantage of the economic opportunities that hosting offers.

Airbnb Entrepreneur Academy Activities

As part of the Academy, participants will hear directly from Superhosts and get tips and tricks to get started and succeed on Airbnb, and many will also learn about our platform and tools that help them build wealth, grow their businesses, and support inclusive tourism.

Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy helped me launch the Amazing Zulu Village Experience on Airbnb and was a lifesaver when all seemed lost. Since becoming an Airbnb host, my confidence and self-esteem have been restored, allowing me to take proactive steps to meet my family’s needs with pride and dignity. Additionally, hosting on Airbnb has helped my family and I understand the importance of relationships and compassion, strengthening our bond and reaffirming our commitment to supporting each other with love and empathy.

As a participant of the Airbnb Entrepreneur Academy program, I have experienced a transformational journey that goes beyond business. I have gained the skills to succeed in the hospitality industry, which has not only impacted my life but also created jobs in my local community. What sets this program apart is its focus on fostering the growth of connections and community, reminding us that Airbnb is not like other travel companies. Airbnb is a platform that values authentic human experiences, and I am proud to be a part of this amazing initiative.

Thanks to the Airbnb Entrepreneur Academy sessions organized by UNESCO and Co’ox Mayab, I discovered a treasure trove of hidden potential in my roots. I learned everything from cultural preservation to the practical applications of technology in tourism. Since attending the Academy, I’ve been able to improve the experiences I offer in hidden cenotes and lush jungles, educating my guests about our roots and sustainability. The response has been amazing, with guests coming not only for the adventure, but also for the stories and connections I provide. It’s been a great pride for me to see my passion evolve into a catalyst for sharing the authenticity and wonder of the Yucatan with the world.

The partnership between Eastern Cherokee Indians and the Airbnb Entrepreneur Academy has been a transformative journey for me, an Indigenous entrepreneur living in a rural community. Through the Academy, I not only gained the knowledge and skills to become an Airbnb Superhost, but I also unlocked my true entrepreneurial potential. This partnership has provided me with the tools, resources, and support to showcase the beauty of my Cherokee heritage to visitors to Cherokee. This partnership has empowered me to create a thriving business that not only benefits myself, but also drives economic growth in my community.

—Melody, Academy participant from North Carolina, USA

By expanding the Airbnb Entrepreneur Academy, we aim to help more communities benefit from tourism in their hometowns. Learn more about the Airbnb Entrepreneur Academy.
