Discount retailer Bob’s Stores will close its brick-and-mortar stores, including in New Jersey, after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
As part of the bankruptcy filing, Bob’s Stores plans to permanently close all 21 of its remaining stores and liquidate its inventory over the coming weeks.
“We are saddened that our financial situation has forced us to liquidate Bob’s Stores,” Dave Barton, president of Bob’s Stores, said in a press release. “Bob’s has been a trusted presence in the local community for nearly 70 years, and we know our customers remember us being there during important moments in their lives.”
Bob’s has stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.
The soon-to-close New Jersey store is located at 3710 US-9 in Freehold.

Each store is holding a “closing down sale” offering 30-70% off everything from clothing to shoes.
Bob’s originally began as “Bob’s Surplus” in Connecticut in 1954 and was acquired by TJX in 2003. Five years later, TJX sold the chain to a private equity firm, then sold it again in 2022 to Go Digital Media Group.
The discount retailer becomes the latest chain to close stores, following companies such as Red Lobster and Rite Aid.
