Advances in clear frame engine technology
The chairman of the Illinois Corn Marketing Board (ICMB) says checkoff funds are being used to advance technology to convert diesel engines to run on ethanol.
Stephenson County farmer John Rosenstiel says his brownfield investment in Clear Flame Engine Technologies is paying off.
“Right now we have trucks on the road that actually run on 98 percent pure ethanol,” he says.
ICMB funded Clear Flame’s initial research, and the company sold its first modified truck earlier this year, he says.
“They’re actually based out of Illinois near Chicago,” he says, “and you might see a few of their trucks out on the roads where they’re doing mileage testing.”
Rosenstiel says this is another way to increase demand for corn.
“We’re always looking for new sources of corn so we can grind it and use up our stock,” he says.
He said Clearflame trucks offer diesel-like performance while saving on fuel costs compared to traditional large trailers, making them environmentally friendly.
