A Lexington neighborhood night market hopes shoppers can escape the heat.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The summer heat can take its toll on many people, making them reluctant to go outside.

But KFC Pop-Ups is getting around that problem by planning a night market that starts when the sun goes down.

They held the event on Friday at Morton Middle School from 4-9 p.m., hoping that by having the event in the late afternoon, people would show up.

“It’s harder to have a daytime market in July, late June and August, but we do it anyway. But the night market will eventually calm down because once the sun starts to go down, people want to be outside,” said Elizabeth Stepp, owner of Kentucky Pop-Up.

Just because it’s hot outside for shoppers doesn’t mean it’s any easier for sellers.

Liz Combs, owner of Combs Confections, set up shop at the night market. She said, “We’ve been to a few events over the summer, and it’s been a hot summer so far, so we’ve set up some coolers to keep everything cool. We’re only putting out as much product as we need.”

If you think being under the sun or inside a tent is too hot, try standing at the hot plate serving up specialty grilled cheese sandwiches.

“It gets really hot in there, but normally we have fans and exhaust fans in the back that keep it cool, but today I’m definitely sweating,” Sister Shack employee Mia Fisher said.

She said she and her boss – her mother – had to get creative to keep calm.

“I also have ice packs in there. Every now and then I’ll take them out and put them nearby to help cool me down.”
