Former President Donald Trump was rushed off the stage on Saturday just minutes into a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, after a loud gunshot-like sound was heard. Trump is expected to survive, according to two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the incident. He had blood on the side of his head and in his ear.
As Trump spoke, he reached over to the side of his face after hearing a popping sound from the crowd. Secret Service agents then rushed onto the stage and surrounded him, causing him to crouch down. He was quickly escorted into a car and driven off the stage surrounded by agents.
Screams rang out from the audience as the scene unfolded.
President Joe Biden, who is in Delaware over the weekend, has been briefed on the situation, a White House official said.
The Biden campaign is aware of the situation and is monitoring it, a senior spokesperson told NBC News.
Minutes after the incident, politicians began posting on social media that they were praying for President Trump.
The Republican National Convention, where Trump will officially become the GOP’s presidential nominee, is set to begin on Monday.
