MARRAKECH: The Shura Council has highlighted Qatar’s commitment and enthusiasm to support start-ups, provide promising investment opportunities and foster entrepreneurship.

This was stated in a speech delivered by His Excellency Abdullah bin Nasser bin Turki Al Subaie, Vice President of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly and Member of the Shura Council, at the second meeting of the Marrakech Economic Parliamentary Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Region, organized by the Moroccan Parliament in collaboration with the House of Councillors.

Al Subaie said Qatar has made great strides in supporting projects and start-ups and providing investment opportunities through the establishment of laws and streamlining procedures, pointing to the work of Qatar Development Bank in this area.

He explained that the bank provides funding for projects and some of the initial research to help entrepreneurs make good investment decisions, as well as rewarding good and successful projects, and encouraging women’s participation in the economy.

He stressed that the State encourages professional foreign investment companies to enter the Qatari market and has recently reduced all service fees provided to the trade, industry and business development sectors by more than 90 percent in order to encourage capital investment in various economic sectors.

In his speech, His Excellency touched upon Qatar’s efforts to strengthen cooperation with international organizations and bodies related to environmental and climate change issues, and mentioned the agreements ratified by the country in this regard.

He also discussed obstacles to integration among the countries of the region and challenges in promoting economic development, touching on the energy crisis, disruptions to food supply chains due to climate change, the ongoing impact of the pandemic, wars in food-importing countries in the region, etc. He stressed the urgent need for structural economic reforms and reforms to the current international financial system to align with developing economies and their needs.

His Excellency stressed the responsibility of Parliament to address these challenges, saying that Parliament has a responsibility to confront all these challenges, find solutions and provide material and human resources to implement and monitor them, which requires cooperation and coordination between Parliament and legislative bodies, engagement of the private sector, empowerment of women and youth, promotion of sustainable development and governance of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence.

He added that lawmakers are looking to the platform as a regional leadership centre for parliamentary work on the green energy transition and supporting investment and small-scale projects.”

Al-Subaie began his address at the forum by referring to the recent tragic events in Gaza, noting that the occupying forces are waging a brutal and vicious war on the territory, which has resulted in thousands of martyrs and wounded, many of them women and children, and the destruction of infrastructure before the eyes of the world.

He reaffirmed Qatar’s firm supportive stance for the right of the Palestinian people to live in dignity on their own land and to establish an independent state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.

The two-day Marrakech Economic Parliament Forum will discuss the link between energy security and the green energy transition, supporting entrepreneurship and SMEs, addressing the challenges and delivering clean and sustainable energy. The Forum will focus on regional solutions to support entrepreneurship, economic growth and connectivity across the Euro-Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf regions.

The Forum will bring together political and economic actors representing the public and private sectors, experts and academics specialising in the Forum’s theme, as well as representatives of civil society.
