The saying “The flag flies forever” means everything in the world of football, especially for powerhouse teams competing for conference flags and title trophies. Last season, the University of Michigan football team defeated the then-undefeated Washington Huskies in the College Football Championship to win their first title since 1997. Although Michigan compiled a perfect 15-0 record, their journey to the top was not without its challenges. Most notably, Michigan faced an NCAA investigation into allegations of sign stealing.
Coach Jim Harbaugh missed the final three games of the regular season due to a conference suspension, but the NCAA ultimately did not strip the Wolverines of their title or void any wins. In April, college football’s governing body put Michigan on three years’ probation for recruiting. But Michigan’s biggest rival, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and primarily their fans, likely won’t forgive the Wolverines so easily heading into next fall.

More news about EA College Football 25 was announced via social media on Thursday. With less than a week until the college football series’ long-awaited return, the anticipation is palpable. Among those eager for the release are the ever-voiced Ohio State fans. One such die-hard fan made headlines on Thursday when he posted a tweet criticizing Michigan football.

An Ohio State superfan known on Twitter as “Mister Ohio” posted a screenshot of a Google search bar that read “How to cheat in NCAA 25.” Above the tweet was written, “Michigan fans, next Friday,” the day EA College Football 25 will be released to the public (early access begins Tuesday). As of late Thursday, Mr. Ohio had more than 500,000 views and was on the verge of becoming a hit tweet on an account with more than 49,000 followers. College sports fans are still gunning for Michigan football after the NCAA investigated the Big Ten program’s sign-stealing scandal.
University of Michigan football: Avoids severe punishment after 2023 sign-stealing scandal
The NCAA does not prohibit sign stealing, but it does prohibit the video recording of opposing teams’ signals. The NCAA also “strictly prohibits off-campus, in-person scouting of future opponents.” Midway through the 2023 season, the NCAA investigated the University of Michigan Wolverines, head coach Jim Harbaugh, and staff member Connor Stallions for sign stealing.
The Stallions resigned in early November, but evidence circulated that their former staff member was on the sidelines of a Central Michigan-Michigan State game. Communications between Michigan football, the Big Ten, the NCAA and other programs ultimately led to a three-game suspension of Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh. However, college football’s governing body found no connection between the bench boss and the sign-stealing allegations. An investigation also led to the firing of linebackers coach Chris Partridge for “failing to comply with university instructions not to discuss the ongoing NCAA investigation.”
The University of Michigan football team ended up winning the College Football Playoff Championship, capping off a fantastic 15-0 season and claiming the 10th title in team history. In the end, Michigan largely avoided NCAA sanctions for sign stealing, but it’s not something Ohio State football fans are planning on forgetting.
