TRENDING: Los Angeles Rams confident former fifth-round pick can take next step

Los Angeles Rams reliable tight end Tyler Higbee tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) in the wild-card game against the Detroit Lions. Higbee’s knee injury occurred in January and typically takes about six to nine months (or longer) to recover from, meaning he will likely begin the season on the PUP list and miss at least the first four games of 2024. If he is sidelined, the tight ends will need to fill in for his absence.

The Rams signed Colby Parkinson to a three-year contract this offseason and addressed the position in free agency. There is a lot of competition for the TE2/TE1 position, and one player stood out throughout offseason workouts.

The Los Angeles Rams’ second-year player has been outstanding.

Davis Allen impressed throughout offseason workouts, including OTAs and mandatory minicamp, leading many Rams reporters to believe he can take over as TE1 and become a star. Allen is coming off a limited rookie season, playing just 192 offensive snaps, but flashed flashes of brilliance, especially against the Ravens.

In 2023, he appeared in 15 games, starting one, and recorded 10 receptions on 11 targets for 95 yards and one touchdown. In the Wild Card game, he recorded two receptions for 28 yards on two targets.

He has already impressed their head coach.

Sean McVay praised Davis Allen during mandatory minicamp

“I think Davis Allen has taken big steps in the right direction,” McVay said. “This game means a lot to him. Higbee was out for the second half of the season and Davis stepped in and I thought he did a great job. He played big in Baltimore, played big in Washington and played big against Detroit. It’s always been fun watching tape of him at Clemson because there are some guys there that have a feel for it.”

He will be competing with free agents for a spot.

Former Seattle Seahawks tight end also participating

Colby Parkinson will also be competing for the de facto starting tight end spot. The former Seahawk played primarily as a Y tight end for four seasons, recording over 600 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Outside of Higbee, Parkinson has played in 54 games and is by far the most experienced of the remaining tight ends.

Expect this competition to intensify throughout training camp and once they put on the pads. We’ll likely get a clearer answer on Tyler Higbee’s availability once training camp gets underway.
