DNV validated the methodology developed and used by Carbon8, an innovative clean technology company specialising in helping hard-to-abate industries reduce carbon emissions and divert incineration residues from landfill.
Carbon8’s patented technology captures CO permanently2 Carbon emissions from hard-to-abate industries are captured at source, and DNV has verified that Carbon8’s method meets the ISO 14064 Part 2 standard. The technology also diverts ash and residues that would otherwise be disposed of in landfill, transforming them into materials that can be used in high-quality construction products, turning the built environment into a carbon sink.
Keen to demonstrate reliability, quality and traceability, Carbon8 selected DNV to verify and certify its methodology. ISO 14064 Part 2 requirements relate specifically to the quantification, monitoring and reporting of activities, technologies and processes that can reduce carbon/greenhouse gas emissions.
DNV has verified that the methodology designed and used by Carbon8 is:
- It provides accurate reporting and eliminates the risk of double counting or unsupported deletions.
- Accurately measure emissions reduction/elimination by taking into account emissions from the manufacture, operation and disposal of equipment.
- Establish rigorous, transparent and repeatable monitoring procedures.
Commenting on this technology, Jamie Burrows, head of CCUS Energy Systems at DNV, said: “Application technologies such as those developed by Carbon8 can capture and store CO2.2 It has a high level of permanence. Such technologies will become increasingly important in the future and could be particularly beneficial in regions where CCS is not an option due to a lack of supporting policies or infrastructure. In addition to producing materials that can be used in existing value chains, biogenic CO2Such technologies can remove carbon dioxide with a high level of permanence.”
“The main objective of this methodology is to provide our customers, regardless of industry, with confidence in our technology. The telemetry in our operations is backed by the certification of a highly respected verification partner in DNV, providing a dataset that provides transparency on volumes and provenance,” says Maarten van Roon, chief commercial officer at Carbon8.
Lucy Craig, DNV’s senior vice president and director of growth, innovation and digitalization, Energy Systems, added: “DNV is committed to advancing CCUS and supporting a range of stakeholders in validating carbon removal methods. By providing assurance to projects and stakeholders, we minimise risk, increase investor attractiveness and ultimately accelerate the deployment of this key technology that will drive emissions reductions.”
