Leader of the Opposition in India’s Lower House Rahul Gandhi congratulated British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his landslide victory in Saturday’s elections.
In his letter to Starmer, Gandhi highlighted Labour’s focus on economic growth with equality, expanding opportunity through strong social services and empowering communities, noting that these priorities resonate strongly with British voters.
“I offer my heartfelt congratulations on your stunning election victory – a huge achievement for the Labour Party and for you personally. Your campaign’s focus on economic growth with equality, better opportunities for all through stronger social services and empowering communities clearly resonated with the British people, reflecting their aspirations for a brighter future,” Gandhi said in the letter.

He said he believes in the same ideals stated in their election campaigns.
“As someone committed to these ideals, I congratulate you and the British people for championing them. Your victory is a testament to the power of politics that puts people first. I look forward to continuing to strengthen bilateral relations between India and the UK,” the letter further reads.
“I wish you every success in your tenure and look forward to meeting you in the near future,” he said.
Prime Minister Rahul Gandhi on Saturday offered his condolences over the defeat of Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party in the British general election, acknowledging that triumphs and setbacks are an “inevitable part” of the democratic process.
“I express my condolences over the recent election results. Both victories and setbacks are inevitable on the path of democracy and we have to face both with equanimity,” Prime Minister Rahul Gandhi said in a statement.

The leader also praised Rishi Sunak for his dedication to public service, commitment to the welfare of the people and efforts towards strengthening ties between India and the UK.
The Labour Party won overwhelming support in the UK elections and came to power after 14 years of Conservative rule.
With 648 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons now in the books, Labour has won 412 seats, while the Conservatives have been reduced to just 121.

Starmer, a former lawyer who became an MP in 2015, became Labour leader in 2020.
In his first speech outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer promised to serve all Americans regardless of who they voted for and assured that a process of change to “rebuild Britain” would begin immediately.
