  • The stock and bond markets are closed on major holidays and both close early on certain days.
  • Stock market holidays also apply to the bond market, but early bond market closures are different.
  • You can still initiate certain actions in your brokerage account (such as deposits and withdrawals) even while it is closed.

The US stock market is generally closed on major holidays such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving. Not all holidays close the stock market; trading is still possible on holidays such as Valentine’s Day and Halloween.

While the markets are closed, you will not be able to trade on any of the best online brokerages or investment platforms (except cryptocurrency exchanges).

Here are the dates and major holidays that stock and bond markets will be closed on in 2024:

Is the stock market open on the 4th of July?

The stock market will be closed on July 4th in observance of Independence Day, and will also close early at 1pm EST on July 3rd. Investors will not be able to trade during this period.

The bond market will also be closed all day on July 4th in observance of Independence Day.

Will the stock market open on July 5th?

Yes, the stock market will be open on July 5. The day after Independence Day is not a federal holiday, so the stock and bond markets will have their regular trading hours.

After the holidays, U.S. stock and bond markets will resume normal trading hours on July 5th, starting at 9:30 a.m. ET.

What time does the stock market open?

Regular stock market trading hours are from 9:30am to 4pm EST on weekdays, except on the day before or after certain holidays, when the market closes at 1pm EST.

Additionally, some brokerages and investment platforms allow you to trade during pre-market hours (4:00 AM to 9:30 AM EST). The same goes for after-hours trading, which is available from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM EST.

However, the available hours vary by broker – for example, SoFi Invest only offers pre-market trading from 9am to 9:30am EST, but has extended trading hours from 4pm to 8pm.

Bond market holidays 2024

The bond market has slightly different trading hours and holiday/early closures: premarket hours are from 4am to 8am, regular trading hours are from 8am to 5pm ET, and extended trading hours are from 5pm to 8pm ET.

Below you will also find the 2024 holiday and early closing dates.

Can I use my account when the stock market is closed?

Unless you use an international stock exchange or electronic communications network, you may not be able to trade on weekends or holidays when the markets are closed.

During the holidays, you can check your balance, monitor your portfolio performance, and make deposits and withdrawals. Please note that you will not be able to place orders until the markets reopen. The speed at which your deposit or withdrawal of funds is completed will depend on your broker’s business hours.
