Many stores are expected to be closed on Independence Day, but some will remain open.

Happy Birthday, America!

Thursday marks the 248th anniversary of the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, making the Fourth of July a national holiday filled with fireworks, musical celebrations and other flag-waving opportunities. (Never mind that July 2 is the actual day the United States declared its independence from Great Britain; it was the final wording of the Declaration that was ratified on July 4.)

As in past years, many markets, including the stock and bond markets, will be closed for the holiday.

Here’s what you need to know:

Are the stock and bond markets closed on the 4th of July? What about the 5th of July?

Yes, US stock markets will be closed including the NYSE, NASDAQ and bond markets. The NYSE and NASDAQ closed at 1pm on July 3rd and the bond markets closed at 2pm. All markets will resume normal trading on July 5th.

Are banks closed on the 4th of July?

Yes, expect banks to be closed on July 4th. Federal Reserve Banks and their branches observe Thursday as a holiday, and most other banks follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule.

But if you need cash, you still have the option of using an ATM, and you might also be able to transfer money or use other services through your bank’s app.

Will the post office be open on the 4th of July?

The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail on the 4th of July, and post offices will be closed.

However, some postal services may be available online, such as ordering stamps and other postal supplies, printing shipping labels, and scheduling after-holiday package pickups. All you need is a USPS.com account.

Are FedEx and UPS open on the 4th of July?

FedEx (FDX) will not be open on July 4th, except for custom critical shipments. FedEx Office store hours will be modified.

UPS will not be offering service on the Fourth of July, except for Express Critical shipments. UPS stores may be closed. UPS advises customers to check with their local store.

Are government offices open on the 4th of July?

Because the 4th of July is a federal holiday, all non-essential federal offices are closed (the same generally applies to state government offices, including DMV offices).

Is school open on the 4th of July?

Many schools in the United States are on summer vacation. However, for summer classes or terms, schools tend to follow the federal holiday schedule, so they will likely be closed. Check with your school district to be sure.

What about shops and restaurants?

Many retail stores and restaurants are open. In fact, this is a good holiday for discount sales. Popular items on sale during the holidays include patio furniture, electronics, mattresses, and summer clothing.

However, some stores may not be open on Independence Day — Costco (COST), for example, will be closed, while rival Sam’s Club (WMT) will be open but with slightly reduced hours — so it’s a good idea to check with stores and restaurants before heading out.
