Paris’ Moulin Rouge cabaret has reopened its windmill just weeks after its shocking collapse.
PARIS (AP) — The red windmill has returned to Paris’ Moulin Rouge cabaret. Earlier this year, its giant sail mysteriously collapsed after a performance at the famous theater. The windmill is a symbol of the surrounding Montmartre district and the bohemian Parisian lifestyle. Part of the cabaret’s electric sign also fell to the ground, in what the director called a technical problem. No one was injured and the mayor of Paris’ 18th arrondissement said the building was not in danger. The new windmill was unveiled Friday in a special ceremony that also included can-can dancing. This year marks the Moulin Rouge’s 135th anniversary.

Ronaldo consoles dejected Pepe as Portugal’s veterans suffer brutal elimination from Euro 2024
HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — It wasn’t Cristiano Ronaldo who was in tears this time. The Portugal superstar’s role was to console crying teammates after a tough loss at the last European Championship and perhaps their last major international tournament. Pepe, a defender who is still playing for his country at the astonishing age of 41, was inconsolable as he clung to Ronaldo’s shoulder and cried for about 15 seconds after Portugal lost to France on penalties in the quarterfinals in Hamburg on Friday. It was quite a sight, considering the two mainstays of Portugal and a combined age of 80. “Football is very cruel,” Pepe said.
How an Oscar-winning film director helped secure a huge grant for a small-town Ohio arts theater
YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio (AP) — When Little Arts Theatre was trying to secure a $100,000 grant to fund a stylish new sign, the cozy arthouse theater had a talented helper. Oscar-winning documentarian Steve Bogner lives in Yellow Springs, an Ohio town where the theater is a downtown staple. Bogner, co-director of the 2020 film “American Factory,” is an advocate for small, regional independent theaters trying to survive in the shift to streaming. His eight-minute video won the theater the grant, using a series of classic movie titles projected on the theater’s marquee and interviews with locals to explain Little Arts’ importance to the neighborhood and society.
Where citrus trees once flourished, pongamia trees now grow, providing renewable energy and plant-based protein.
An ancient tree from India is now thriving in Florida’s citrus groves that once thrived, and it could help provide the country with renewable energy. With much of Florida’s once-famous citrus industry nearly wiped out in the last two decades due to deadly diseases like greening and citrus canker, some farmers are turning to pongamia trees. The climate-tolerant tree has the potential to produce vegetable protein and sustainable biofuel. The tree thrives in drought and rain, and requires no fertilizers or pesticides. California-based Telviva has also used a patented process to remove the bitterness from pongamia beans, making them edible.
Palestinian soccer team to play World Cup qualifiers in West Bank
The Palestinian football team is determined to host a match for a change after progressing ever further in World Cup qualifiers. The Football Association has proposed hosting the third match of the Asian qualifiers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and has already received support from several opponents, starting with a match against Jordan on September 10. The Palestinian team made it through the second round of continental qualifiers for the first time in history in June, but because of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, they have played “home” matches in neighbouring Kuwait and Qatar. The last international match played in the Palestinian territories was in 2019.

Mbappe warns of ‘catastrophic’ political situation in France as far-right forces approach power
HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — France soccer captain Kylian Mbappe warned that the country is in a “catastrophic” political situation as it moves closer to its first far-right government since World War II. In the first round of hastily called elections, the Rally National party won about 33 percent of the vote nationwide. The second round of parliamentary elections takes place on Sunday, and Marine Le Pen’s party could take power. Mbappe urged people to go to the polls “now more than ever” because the situation is “urgent.” “We cannot let our country fall into the hands of these people,” he said.
