Spain is set to introduce a mobile application aimed at preventing minors from accessing pornographic material. The application, called the “Porn Passport,” will allow legitimate users to access pornographic material without their usage being tracked, while discouraging children from accessing the same material.
What is Porn Passport?
The Olive Press reports that the “porn passport” initiative is part of the Spanish government’s new digital wallet app.
Officially called Cartera Digital Beta, the app will allow internet platforms to verify whether people viewing pornography are of legal age.
How does it work?
Starting later this summer, porn viewers will be asked to verify their age through the app. Once verified, they’ll be given 30 “porn credits” to access explicit content. Porn credits expire in one month.
How do “Porn Credits” or tokens work?
According to News Byte, each credit issued by the app generates a QR code.
When a user enters the address of a pornographic site, a link appears, which, when clicked, activates a connection with the digital wallet.
The wallet presents credentials that verify the user’s age without revealing any other details, and users can use one token across 10 visits to the same website.
How do we verify a user’s age?
A government issued ID will be used to verify your age.
Is there a limit to the number of tokens I can generate in a month?
Users can renew their tokens or porn credits as many times as they like in a month.
However, if you run out of tokens, you will receive a warning to renew your digital passport, and frequent website visits increase your risk of being tracked.
The system has been criticised for its complexity, but the Spanish government insists it is privacy-friendly and that user details will not be tracked.
